Chromosome-mediated multidrug resistance in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi.

A salmonella genomic island, designated SGI11, was found in 18 of 26 multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from Bangladesh. SGI11 was an IS1 composite transposon and carried 7 resistance genes that conferred resistance to 5 first-line antimicrobials. Eleven of the 18 SGI11-carrying S. Typhi isolates had developed resistance to high levels of ciprofloxacin.

Multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica serovar typhi.

Nepal is having a series of enteric fever epidemics over the last decade1,2 with changing resistance patterns.3 The fi rst report of multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi in Nepal was published in 1991.4 In the following years, with the introduction of fl uoroquinolones in the treatment, nalidixic acid-resistant strains associated with reduced susceptibility to fl oroquinolones ...

Plasmid-mediated resistance to cephalosporins in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi.

This study characterized a cephalosporin-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolate. The organism possessed a plasmid encoding the CTX-M-15 extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase. This plasmid is the determinant for the phenotype of cephalosporin resistance and is transferrable among Enterobacteriaceae.

Emergence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar typhi in Korea.

A chloramphenicol-resistant strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi was first noted in Korea in 1992, when a resistant isolate was detected in a returned traveler. Continued isolation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains thereafter in other settings prompted a retrospective analysis of laboratory records and phenotypic and genotypic analyses of 12 chloramphenicol-resistant isolates. Among t...

Genotypic analysis of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica Serovar typhi, Kenya.

We report the emergence in Kenya during 1997-1999 of typhoid fever due to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and cotrimoxazole. Genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA yielded a single cluster. The multidrug-resistant S. Typhi were related to earlier drug- susceptible isolates but were u...
